NEW YORK Nike wants to be more nimble on its feet.

The sneaker maker said Thursday that it plans to focus on the hottest selling sneakers, slash the number of styles it offers and sell more shoes directly to customers online as part of a restructuring in which it also will cut about 1,400 jobs.

Nike said the moves will help it offer products to customers faster as it is facing increasing competition from smaller brands and premium labels. Another problem: The running and basketball shoes Nike is famous for may be outdated.

More people are choosing fashion over function, with sales of classic sneakers industry wide climbing 26 percent last year, according to research from The NPD Group. Meanwhile, sales of running performance sneakers were flat and sales of basketball performance sneakers dropped, according to the same report.

“Nike missed the fashion shift away from performance basketball to retro,” said Matt Powell, the sports industry analyst at NPD. The German company said last month that first quarter revenue in North America jumped 31 percent from a year before. And on the high end, Neiman Marcus noted to investors last week that sneakers, with an average retail price of $360 per pair, have become a significant business as shoppers focus on a more casual lifestyle.

“The increase in speed of innovation and delivery is a direct response to the expectations of today’s consumers,” analysts at Susquehana Financial Group said in a note about Nike’s moves.

Nike, known for its swoosh logo, will also make its sneaker selling apps available in more countries at a time when online sales mean many big retailers and department stores are closing stores.

“We’re getting even more aggressive in the digital marketplace,” said CEO Mark Parker.

Nike said a main focus will be the 12 key cities in 10 countries that it expects to represent more than 80 percent of its projected growth through 2020. Those cities are New York, Los Angeles, London,

Paris, Milan, Mexico City, Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai and Beijing.

“It appears to us that everything Nike is working on is a brand first story. If the initiatives don’t help the Nike brand, they do not happen,” the Susquehana analysts said.

They said customers will barely notice the decrease in styles given the breadth of options Nike offers.

But the shake up, announced two weeks before Nike releases its financial results for the most recent quarter, seemed to make investors nervous. Its stock fell 3 percent to $52.90 on Thursday.

Christopher Svezia, a footwear and apparel analyst at Wedbush, said that when companies announce jobs cuts and restructuring ahead of earnings reports, it doesn’t typically bode well for how business is going. “We’ll learn more in two weeks,” he said.

Nike Inc., which is based in Beaverton, Oregon, said the layoffs represent about 2 percent of its 70,000 employees around the world. It declined to provide additional details about the cuts. The Susquehana analysts said they believed the jobs cuts are likely eliminating redundant back office positions as a result of a consolidation of reporting segments.

adidas culver Database aims to ID migrants who died in South Texas using their belongings

adidas originals swim shorts Database aims to ID migrants who died in South Texas using their belongings

NEAR FALFURRIAS His walk through the treacherous South Texas brush ended sometime before Jan. 7, 2013, when his body was found in the Laborcitas Creek Ranch about two miles from the nearest road.

Medical examiners determined the unidentified man between 30 and 50 years old had suffered severe damage to the ball of his femur, possibly related to an untreated hip break which would have made it extremely painful for him to walk, according to case number 0462.

Most likely abandoned by his smuggler, the unidentified man died leaving a void in his family and nothing to link him back to them except the Addidas jacket and Guess brand jeans he was wearing, three small hair clips, and a crumpled up prayer card with a picture of Jesus that were found along with his remains.

The Texas Observer in collaboration with Baylor University and the South Texas Human Rights Center launched the Yo Tengo Nombre , I Have a Name initiative which aims at identifying migrant bodies or remains recovered in South Texas using the belongings found with them.

“In the last 15 years, since the checkpoint was made permanent, hundreds have died, their identities often unknown to those who find them. But to their families, they are loved ones who’ve gone missing,” wrote Jen Reel, multimedia editor at the Observer who leads the initiative.

The database, in English and Spanish, was launched in October and is made up of hundreds of photos of items categorized by case number. The photos include basic forensic information about the migrants to facilitate the identification of them for families, activists, government officials and others, according to the website.

Since the launch of the database there have been at least three inquiries and two possible matches, according to officials. Despite their vast efforts,
adidas culver Database aims to ID migrants who died in South Texas using their belongings
the database only represents a fraction of the cases of unidentified migrants found in North and South Texas.

During Fiscal Year 2016 (Oct. 2015 to Sept. Customs and Border Protection tallied more than 120 migrant deaths in the Rio Grande Valley Sector making it the third deadliest year in the sectors history.

Migrant deaths peaked in 2013 when the RGV sector became the busiest illegal border crossing in the United States, surpassing Arizona which had held the record for migrant deaths since 2002. In the last decade more than 1,000 people have died in the RGV sector according to CBP data, but unofficial estimates could be as high as 6,000.

Every year thousands of migrants make the dangerous trek across the desolate ranchlands of South Texas, attempting to circumvent the Border Patrol checkpoints stationed along major roads leading north, some 75 miles inland.

As The Monitor has reported, many of the migrants are kept in stash houses whey are sometimes extorted, assaulted and forced to live in deplorable conditions. Most migrants caught after their stay at some of these houses say they were threatened and given very little to drink or eat.

According to Webb County Medical Examiner Dr. Corinne Stern, who sees most of the migrant bodies or remains recovered in South Texas, most of the migrants die of dehydration. Like case 0462, many suffer minor injuries that prevent them from keeping up with the group and are abandoned exhausted and disoriented in the maleza or brushlands of South Texas.

Brooks County is at the apex of the migrant death catastrophe that has plagued the southwest border, according to South Texas Human Rights Center Director Eddie Canales. Canales arrived here the year after a team of forensic anthropologists led by Dr. Lori Baker of Baylor University began exhuming bodies buried improperly and without DNA testing in so called mass graves at the Sacred Heart cemetery here.

Baker, with the help of other forensic experts at Texas State University and the University of Indianapolis, began cataloging the remains exhumed at the cemetery and submitting DNA samples to the University of North Texas where they are uploaded to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

The government site, also known as NamUs, handles tens of thousands of missing and unidentified cases throughout the country, while the Yo Tengo Nombre , I Have a Name site addresses the need for a simpler, more intuitive database, according to the website.

“We hope this tool will contribute to the ongoing efforts to identify the deceased and return their remains to their families,

adidas nastase DA says sheriff interfered with investigation

JANESVILLE A Janesville police investigation into an underage drinking party where an individual was severely injured was slowed down by Rock County Sheriff Bob Spoden interfering with the inquiry, according to Rock County District Attorney David O’Leary.

The interference was so concerning to O’Leary that it prompted the county’s top prosecutor to request the Wisconsin Department of Justice to conduct an independent investigation into perceived interference from the Aug. 14 incident that occurred at a house party in the 3900 block of Dorado Drive in Janesville, a party in which Spoden’s son was in attendance, according to both Janesville police reports from the incident.

The alleged interference stems from Spoden contacting an investigating Janesville officer after parents of other individuals who had attended the party became upset with the prospect of the ongoing investigation. In a text message sent by Spoden to Janesville officer Brian Foster, Spoden stated there was no “criminal intent for the incident” and that Foster had “no reason to harass the kids at the party.” Janesville police records also indicate Spoden instructed his son not to speak with police about the investigation.

Although O’Leary conceded any person can refuse to speak with law enforcement, he said having the county’s top law enforcement official foster an atmosphere of noncooperation with law enforcement hurt the Rock County judicial system.

He added that in his 21 years as district attorney, he had never seen a top law enforcement official insert himself into an investigation of another law enforcement agency.

“It’s not common and it’s concerning,” O’Leary said. “The public needed to be aware that it was looked at objectively by individuals outside this county to see if there were any criminal charges.”

Janesville police began investigating the incident after it was learned via social media that underage drinking had taken place and that an individual was injured during the party.

According to reports obtained by the Beloit Daily News, an individual had jumped into a pool at the home, hitting his head which resulted in him being paralyzed.

The state Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation concluded no criminal interference occurred by Spoden’s actions regarding the inquiry. The report noted the reason for the request was to “document instances of interference in the investigation by Rock County Sheriff Robert Spoden, whose son was in attendance at the party,” according to the Division of Criminal Investigation report obtained by the Beloit Daily News.

Three women were cited for underage drinking, a civil offense, with O’Leary noting he would pursue avenues to reduce the underage drinking citations after the trio underwent drug and alcohol assessments and to go through the county’s underage drinking program.

O’Leary said he didn’t see any problems in coordinating law enforcement efforts with the sheriff’s office going forward, noting the county agency has always been a key asset to the Rock County justice system.

When asked for comment on the investigation, Janesville Police Chief David Moore referred the Beloit Daily News to the supporting police reports from the incident.

Victoria’s Secret created a couple of cutout designs after taking a look at the runways. Zac Posen, Balmain and Gucci are just a few top tier labels who sent out strategically placed bare spots in clothing. Lower cost brands like Bebe also joined the trend.

“It’s one of those easy translations from the runway,” said Sharleen Ernster Lazear, senior vice president of brand design at Victoria’s Secret. “It was a no brainer. It was a good fashion trend to jump on as a brand.”

Stars including Heidi Montag, Kim Kardashian and model Miranda Kerr have been photographed in cutout dresses. Celebrity stylist Nicole Chavez said she’s partial to the cutouts from Herve Leger, which are carried through cocktail dresses to swimsuits.

“I think it’s a really chic look and it’s really high fashion,” she said. “The one piece tends to be a little matronly. This is a way to wear one peice and be very chic.”

Several designers made cutout suits at a reasonable price: Guess,

Miami based designer Red Carter, who designed a suit for Victoria’s Secret that looks like it’s sliced from side to side all over, called it an evolution of the monokini, a bikini held together with strategically placed fabric linking the bottom and top.

Chavez would pair a cutout swimsuit with a pair of great pants and wear it into the evening. The look is feminine and flirty without being overtly sexy. Sometimes a bikini can show too much skin, she said.

“It’s kind of a peekaboo effect. You are only seeing parts of the skin which is sexier than seeing all of it,” Chavez said.

Odabash warns to try one trend at a time don’t wear a neon cutout. Try a neutral tone, like black. And the look isn’t for every body. Carter said he is seeing resistance from his customers to the trend.

adidas kanadia cuts its outlook and shares plunge

BALTIMORE (AP) Under Armour has lost its momentum. It posted lower revenue and cut its outlook again Tuesday, which sent its shares down nearly 24 percent.

The sports apparel company had previously grown phenomenally, and was mentioned in the same breath with industry titans like Nike and Adidas. But it has since floundered, its shares falling more than 85 percent since September 2015. The company had said earlier this year that it would cut almost 2 percent of its workforce.

Revenue in North America, the company’s most important market, fell more than 12 percent in the third quarter. The Baltimore based company lowered its annual per share earnings forecast for the second time in three months to about half what it told investors to expect in August. consumers increasingly elusive, Saunders believes Under Armour is in an especially tough place.

“This is now about more than external factors; it demonstrates issues with the brand and its proposition,” Saunders wrote. “Especially so since other brands and retailers, including Lululemon, have not posted such calamitous figures.”

And Nike’s first quarter earnings last month were down about 24 percent from a year earlier. Still, its shares are up about 2.6 percent since they posted those results.

Plank cited a number of factors for the declining North American sales figures, including retail bankruptcies and store closures, declining productivity and changing fashion preferences.

“As we look to close out 2017, we do not expect these conditions to improve,
adidas website cuts its outlook and shares plunge
” Plank said. He added that the company expects to perform well internationally, but sees “a difficult environment in our North American wholesale business well into next year.”

In addition to its North American issues, Plank said the company also had to deal with “complexities” that resulted from the company rapid growth.

Quarterly profit came to $54.2 million, or 12 cents per share. Earnings adjusted for restructuring costs was 22 cents per share, which was actually 3 cents better than Wall Street had expected, according to a survey by Zacks Investment Research. Under Armour had reported earnings of $128.2 million, or 29 cents per share, for the third quarter last year.

Yet revenue slumped 5 percent to $1.41 billion, short of Wall Street’s expectations of $1.49 billion. Given that decline, Nomura analysts said Under Armour “is by definition not a growth company” and was shifting to a mature one.

The company now expects annual per share earnings of between 18 and 20 cents per share.

Perhaps looking for a silver lining, industry analyst Randal Konik at Jefferies wrote, “The guidance is lowered so significantly that the company should be able to meet or beat its outlook.” He said Jefferies analysts “very much believe in the brand, although the duration of the turn will take longer than we originally thought.”

Gross margins at Under Armour, which excludes a $4 million impact from restructuring efforts announced this year, was 46.2 percent,

a decrease of 130 basis points compared with the same period last year.
